FedEx Offering Contractors $1,500 per Vehicle for New Safety Technology

As a FedEx Ground contractor, you rely on your delivery drivers to keep your customers happy and your business running smoothly. Installing state-of-the-art safety technology not only helps protect your drive team while they are out on the road, but it also protects your bottom line and lowers the risk of costly accidents.

Part of an ongoing effort to help truck drivers reduce the need for evasive maneuvers on the road—maneuvers that typically lead to expensive accidents and collisions—FedEx announced earlier this year that it would be requiring new backup sensors and blindspot detection technology on all FedEx P&D delivery vans. If the new technology is installed by May 31, 2022, FedEx will reimburse contractors $1,500 per vehicle.

What specific safety updates are required?

A significant amount of accidents occur because of low visibility when backing up. To prevent this problem, FedEx now requires a multi-sensor sonar backing system. Sensors installed along the top and bottom of your delivery trucks will provide information in real time and help warn drivers of potential obstacles that may be in the way.

Also required is the use of additional cameras to monitor blind spots. These cameras, which will alert your drivers if something is detected in of their main blind spots, are different from the video recorders that are already mandatory on all delivery vehicles.

Why are new safety measures needed?

An increase in online shopping triggered by the pandemic shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. As FedEx contractors continue to hire new drivers to keep up with the growing demand for deliveries, the new safety technology will help drivers perform their jobs effectively and without incident.

With the right approach, you can build a winning drive team.
